General Assembly Approves New State Legislative District Maps
December 19, 2023
As you will recall, in October, U.S. District Judge Steve Jones threw out the congressional and legislative maps drawn by the Georgia General Assembly two years ago.
Facing a December 8 deadline and the court's requirement that new districts be ready for the 2024 election cycle, Governor Kemp called for a special session that began November 29.
Last week, the General Assembly approved new legislative district maps over objections from Democrats. Expectedly, the vote fell along party lines. The Congressional maps, which were also part of the judge’s order, were also passed. Many believe the new congressional map might still violate a federal judge’s order requiring an additional majority-Black district.
