Forsyth County School Board Confirms Intent to Roll Back Millage Rate for FY 2024
June 12, 2023
On Wednesday, May 31, 2023 the Forsyth County School Board held its first public meeting on their Fiscal Year 2024 (FY2024) budget. The first draft of the budget did include a roll back of 1 mil, which would change the millage rate from 17.3 to 16.3.
However, even with this roll back, residents attending Wednesday’s meeting claim their estimated tax bills went up significantly. One homeowner reported her bill went up by 30%.
In the proposed budget presented last Wednesday, funds were set aside to address future increases in health care costs and future land purchases. School Board members Wes McCall, District 1, and Mike Valdes, District 5, both questioned the need for these set asides with Valdes stating his desire to give the taxpayers relief this year.
The School Board’s Chief Communications Officer announced on Thursday, June 1, that after hearing from residents they will consider rolling back the millage rate more than the original proposed 1 mil. However, the amount of the total roll back has not been determined.
The next draft of the budget and proposed millage rate is now being prepared by the Board and system leaders. It will be presented at the next budget hearing on Thursday, June 15.
